There is a lot of confusion around sunlight nowadays…
If you really think about it though, that’s crazy.
There is no life without the sun.
Sunlight is involved in our health in many important ways.
Did you know:
- Life expectancy is decreased in people who avoid sunlight
- Lower vitamin D levels are associated with lower cognitive abilities (your body produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight)
- Sunlight is actually cancer protective (based on data from over 100 countries)
- Sunlight supports the body’s ability to metabolize subcutaneous fat
Now, given this, should you go overboard on sun exposure?
Of course not!
Doing anything too much is going to be a problem.
So how can you get sunlight safely?
Start with just 10 minutes in the morning – when the sun is still nice and gentle.
Just sunlight on your skin and no sunglasses!
It’s starting off slowly that gets you to adapt to sunlight again.
Also, don’t consume vegetable oils (also called seed oils).
These include canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil, safflower oil, and cottonseed oil.
Because of the inflammation they cause they make us more susceptible to sunburns.
You’ll also want to make sure you:
Consume vitamin E, selenium, carotenoids
Avoid aflatoxin, alcohol, and nitrate rich foods
Now, even when you do take these steps, you still need to be smart about this.
For instance, during the hottest time of day, stay in the shade or cover up.
I personally don’t use sunscreen, I prefer covering up when I feel it’s needed, but there are non-toxic, organic options out there for you to consider.
Just make sure not to use the typical sunscreen, those are full of toxins that can even cause cancer…
And I know there are some who say they can’t handle sunlight…
