This weeks subject line might sound a bit dramatic…

But have you heard of Apeel?

A coating they put on produce that you can’t really see and also can’t be washed off?

Their website claims it’s just natural fats…

And yet, when you go online and search for “Organipeel fungicide” (“organipeel” is the product name, Apeel Technology, Inc is the company)…

… you’ll find their registration with the EPA.

When you look at this EPA registration for Organipeel, you’ll find:

Organipeel is registered as a pesticide under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act

The ingredients listed are .66% citric acid and 99.34% “other ingredients”

And a caution: “Causes moderate eye irritation. Avoid contact with eyes or clothing. Wear safety glasses when handling. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling and before eating, drinking, chewing gum, using tobacco or using the toilet.”

So this is a “peel” they put on produce that can’t be washed off…

… and has all sorts of cautions when having handled it.

And yes, they use it on certain organic produce as well.

But this isn’t the only change hitting our food.

Have you heard of Good Meat or Upside Foods?

They make lab grown chicken meat.

The short of it, cells are taken from animals and grown in bioreactors.

It has been approved by the USDA and FDA.

And it’s already been served at a restaurant in San Francisco.

There are serious health concerns with this, and personally I won’t be eating lab meat.

But what can we do?

Here are the steps I’m taking:

1. For now, I make sure to get as much of my food from local farmers and ranchers as possible.

People that I can talk to, make sure they are organic, regenerative, and I can trust.

2. I read labels to make sure it’s non GMO, doesn’t say “bioengineered,” or has the Apeel sticker on it.

3. I’m also playing around with growing food in my garden.

4. And beyond that, I’m keeping my eyes and ears open for any opportunity where we get to voice our opinions on these issues.

Our food can either heal or harm us…

So what do you think of companies doing this to our food, and with that, to us?
